Fermín Revueltas  (1902-1935)
Bañistas , 1927
Oil on canvas
64.5 x 59.8 cm

Another artist who died young and whose work does not reflect the degree of his commitment to just causes, was Fermín Revueltas. He was affiliated with the Communist Party as a founding member, formed part of the Block of Intellectual Artists, and, as a muralist, of the Technical Workers, Painters, Sculptors and Engravers Union. Artistically he is associated with Stridentism and the demands of the ¡30-30! Group. Nonetheless, his paintings and murals reveal, above all, a man seduced by the beauty of the Mexican countryside, and political subjects are glaringly absent from his paintings. Bañistas is perhaps the earliest known oil of the artist, almost all of his work from this period was scattered thoughout the United States, through the American promoter Francis Toor. The Eden-like vision of this work of Revueltas is compellingly reminder of the exoticism of Gauguin, and the synthetic lines of the structure of the composition give evidence of his cultural formation and knowledge of Post-Impresionism.
